Daniel Apfel is the Chief Operations Officer at Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union, a $30 million credit union with 4,000 members in Rochester, NY. At the credit union, Dan oversees the day-to-day operations and is also deeply involved in the credit union’s lending, partnerships, and policy work. Dan has been involved with Community Development Credit Unions for nearly 15 years: he worked as a Program Officer at Inclusiv from 2007-2009, where he supported Inclusiv’s educational programs and VITA free tax program, and he served on the boards of Alternatives Federal Credit Union (2017-2018) and Alternatives’ affiliated non-profit organizations (2014-2018). Dan is excited to bring his experience in CDCUs and as an advocate for responsible finance to help Inclusiv support the transformative power of community development credit unions.

For his entire professional career, Dan has been an advocate for the development of a more responsible and equitable financial system. Before joining Genesee Co-op, Dan was Senior Associate at Croatan Institute and a consultant to foundations and non-profits. In those roles he worked to build a foundation for and to help asset owners build responsible portfolios across asset classes. Dan spent 5 years as the executive director of the Responsible Endowments Coalition (REC), where he led a staff of 5 working with students, faculty, and administrators to advocate for and implementing responsible investment practices in higher education. Dan’s campaigns and initiatives led to a major shift towards responsible investing in the endowment space.

Dan earned his BA from University of Rochester and MPA from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. In his free time, you’re likely to find Dan sailing on Lake Ontario or cross-country skiing on the trails in beautiful Western New York.
