See below for an excerpt from Credit Unions Seize Low-Income Outreach Opportunities, a recent article in CU Times on how Suncoast and Point West credit unions are employing Federation Secondary Capital.

...Large asset credit unions such as the $7.8 billion Suncoast Credit Union in Tampa, Fla., are using the Federation's secondary capital product to expand affordable housing in the Sunshine state, where homeless rates and home prices are rising. More than 67% of Suncoast's members live in low-income designated areas.

Suncoast's first-time homebuyer mortgage product features expanded underwriting criteria, which allow for a lower credit score, higher LTV ratios and the use of alternative credit history. The credit union also does not require mortgage insurance.

Smaller-asset-size cooperatives such as the $103 million Point West Credit Union have tapped the Federation's secondary capital to support financial services and inclusion initiatives for local immigrant communities. The Portland, Ore.-based credit union has also used its secondary capital to fund affordable non-prime auto loan products.

About Secondary Capital
Secondary Capital is a subordinated loan that can be counted towards a credit union's net worth and can be leveraged by growing CDCUs to expand safe and affordable lending to local communities.

The Federation offers two secondary capital loan products, Secondary Capital I and Secondary Capital II:

• The Federation makes Secondary Capital I loans of up to $500,000 with maturities of 5-7 years and interest rates of between 5%-6%.

• For qualifying credit unions, the Federation offers Secondary Capital II loans of up to $2 million with maturities of 5-7 years and interest rates of between 3.25%-3.75%.
