Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) are credit unions that are governed by, and serve, Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American communities. MDIs are often a valuable option for safe and affordable financial services for their members but can face barriers to growth and sustainability as they work to address structural racism in our financial system.
Inclusiv’s MDI Network connects our MDI members to helpful information and resources through:
- Education – We provide MDI credit union staff and volunteers with training and opportunities to share best practices. Examples of our MDI and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) webinars can be found here.
- Support – We help MDIs build their capacity through technical assistance and access to financial resources. Current programs include our New Majority Growth Initiative and the Racial Equity Grant Fund.
- Partnership – We work together with other organizations to support the growth and sustainability of MDIs. Key partners include the African American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC), Hawaiian Asian Pacific Islander Credit Union Professionals (HAPICUP) and the National Association of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP).
- Promotion – We raise the visibility of MDIs and their impact throughout the credit union and financial service industries. Check out our latest collaboration with AACUC here and participation in the NCUA MDI Symposium here.
- Advocacy – We work with MDIs and allies to advocate for policies that strengthen MDI credit unions. Inclusiv’s recent recommendations on ways to increase support to MDIs can be found here.
